FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Before you book.

Everything you need to know, all in one place.

West Coast Lung is a direct-pay practice and does not bill commercial insurance for Dr. Rutlandu2019s consultations or follow-up care. This allows us to spend more time with each patient and make medical decisions based on your needs rather than insurance requirements.

nWhen additional testing or treatment is neededu2014such as laboratory work, imaging, pulmonary testing, medications, or proceduresu2014those services may be ordered through outside facilities and billed to your insurance as appropriate. We can also provide documentation for your West Coast Lung visits that you may submit for possible out-of-network reimbursement.n

At this time, West Coast Lung is unable to see Medicare beneficiaries for outpatient consultations or ongoing care. Medicare has specific regulations regarding covered medical services and private-pay arrangements, which limit our ability to offer care outside of the Medicare program. We understand this may be disappointing and are happy to help clarify our policy before you book.

No referral is required to schedule a consultation. Patients may contact West Coast Lung directly, whether you're looking for ongoing pulmonary care, help with a new concern, or another perspective on an existing diagnosis.

Yes. Dr. Rutland can serve as your primary pulmonologist and, for appropriate patients, also provide primary care and internal medicine services. This allows him to consider your lung health in the context of your overall healthu2014not as a separate problem in isolation. The scope of ongoing care can be discussed during your initial consultation.

Absolutely. Complex medical problems often benefit from collaboration. Dr. Rutland can work alongside your primary care physician, cardiologist, oncologist, pulmonologist, or other specialists to provide additional pulmonary expertise while keeping your larger care plan in mind.

Anything that helps tell the story of your condition is helpful. This may include recent imaging, pulmonary function testing, laboratory results, hospital records, prior specialist notes, and a current medication list. Our team can help you determine what is most useful before your visit.

Yes, virtual consultations are available when medically appropriate and permitted based on your location. Some conditions may ultimately require an in-person examination, testing, or procedure, and we'll let you know when that would provide better care.

Your initial consultation includes a follow-up visit, so there is time to move from questions to a clear plan. Dr. Rutland can review testing or new information, talk through what it means, and help determine what comes next. From there, you may return as needed or continue with an ongoing care relationship based on your needs.

No. Membership is never required to be seen at West Coast Lung. Patients may begin with a comprehensive consultation and included follow-up, then continue with individual visits as needed.

nFor patients who would benefit from a more continuous relationship, membership offers greater access, closer follow-up, and proactive medical oversight throughout the year. If you choose to transition to membership within 30 days of your included follow-up visit, your $750 initial consultation fee will be applied toward your first year of membership.n

West Coast Lung is not an emergency medical service. If you are experiencing a medical emergency, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department.

nFor established patients, Dr. Rutland may be able to remain involved in your care when hospitalization is necessary. For patients admitted to Hoag, where Dr. Rutland has hospital privileges, this may include seeing you during your hospitalization when appropriate or communicating with your hospital-based medical team to help provide continuity of care. Availability and involvement will depend on the circumstances of your hospitalization and your existing care relationship with Dr. Rutland.n
