COPD Treatment in Newport Beach

Experience 5-Star Treatment to Help Manage Your Condition

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD, is a group of lung diseases that make it difficult for you to breathe. A progressive disease, COPD worsens over time with symptoms becoming more severe and flare-ups more frequent. Smoking, air pollutants, and chemical fumes are a few factors that can lead to the development of COPD. Fortunately, with proper testing, education, and lifestyle changes, this condition can be managed. Dr. Rutland offers comprehensive COPD treatment in Newport Beach, and can help you manage your condition so you can lead an enjoyable life.

Types of COPD

The two most common types of COPD are chronic bronchitis and emphysema. Both conditions affect your lungs differently. It’s possible to have a degree of both conditions at the same time.

Chronic Bronchitis – Causes constant inflammation of your lungs that results in an increased cough and mucus production, and a reduction in airflow.

Emphysema – Also known as dead lung, emphysema affects your air sacs, causing them to become enlarged and unable to return to their normal size. This makes it hard for air to enter your lungs and subsequently makes it difficult for you to breathe.

What You Can Expect at Your First Appointment

During your first appointment, we will perform a full pulmonary workup – spirometry, lung ultrasound, EKG, pulse oximetry, and a full patient intake to learn about your medical history, activity, and goals. Depending on your symptoms, a walk test and echo may also be used. Oftentimes, labs will be drawn, and, in some cases, a bronchoscopy, biopsy, chest x-ray, and CT scan will be needed to garner further information.

Continuation of Care

Treatment for COPD is personal, and the continuation of care is dependent upon the severity, reaction to medicine, and your specific needs. COPD is a degenerative condition requiring consistent and life-long monitoring. Symptoms can be managed and with that, can greatly improve your quality of life.

Additional Support

Our staff works closely with oxygen companies and insurance carriers to help those who may need supplemental oxygen support. We also provide resources to help you stop smoking, manage lung infections, improve lung function, and live an overall healthier and happier life.
