Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD) Treatment in Newport Beach

Preserve the Function of Your Lungs at West Coast Lung

Interstitial lung disease (ILD) covers a large group of autoimmune lung disorders causing inflammation and scarring of the lungs affecting how oxygen is transferred into the bloodstream. Systemic autoimmune conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, scleroderma, and lupus can silently attack the lungs. As cellular communication continues, this leads to damaging white blood cells in the lungs, causing irreversible lung damage. Oftentimes, other autoimmune disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis can cause ILD. Shortness of breath and dry cough are the most common symptoms. If left untreated, ILD will continue to cause irreversible scarring. If you are experiencing symptoms, see Dr. Rutland right away for an evaluation and interstitial lung disease treatment in Newport Beach.

What to Expect at Your First Appointment

During your first appointment, we will perform a full pulmonary workup – spirometry, lung ultrasound, EKG, pulse oximetry, and a full patient intake to learn about history, activity, and your goals. Depending on your symptoms, a walk test and echo may also be used. Oftentimes, labs will be drawn, and, in some cases, a bronchoscopy, biopsy, chest x-ray, and/or CT scan will be needed to garner further information.

Continuation of Care

Once an ILD diagnosis has been determined, Dr. Rutland works to slow bad cellular communication. Continuation of care is life-long and based on the severity of your condition. Oftentimes, care will include a Care Team consisting of other physicians (ie: Rheumatology). ILD can be managed to lead to an overall happier and healthier life. In some severe cases, a lung transplant will be needed. Dr. Rutland works closely with lung transplant teams and several of our patients have received transplants quickly.
